On Sunday, April 15, the Bush family released a statement that the family matriarch and former first lady, Barbara Bush, had decided to forego medical treatment and focus on comfort care. The 92-year-old was suffering from several illnesses, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure.
Sadly, only two days later on April 17, Barbara Bush passed away. Following her death, the heartwarming messages and tributes came pouring in. Many people talked about the long and successful life of the former first lady.
Bush’s office released the news of her death, saying, “A former First Lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the age of 92.”
Now, the tear-jerking story of how former president George H.W. Bush spent his last day with his wife has been revealed. According to PEOPLE, he did not leave Barbara’s side the entire day.
Bush’s longtime chief of staff, Jean Becker, released a statement on Tuesday night following the news of Barbara’s death.
Becker said, “So many of you are asking, ‘How is 41?’ He, of course, is broken-hearted to lose his beloved Barbara, his wife of 73 years. He held her hand all day today and was at her side when [she] left this good earth.”
Becker continued, “Obviously, this is a very challenging time. But it will not surprise all of you who know and love him, that he also is being stoic and strong, and is being lifted up by his large and supportive family. He is determined to be there for them as well. He appreciates all the well wishes and support.”
Recently, Barbara’s granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, opened up about her grandmother’s failing health. She said that while it was sad, one of her favorite things was that George H.W. Bush would still say “I love you, Barbie” every single day to his beloved wife.
The couple met when George was 18 and Barbara was 17. Two years later, they were married. After 73 years of standing side by side in marriage, George held his wife’s hand as they said goodbye.
