Here's All You Need to Know About the Unexpected Royal Baby Name

Well, the wait is over. Fans of the royal family waited four days to learn the name of Prince William and Duchess Kate's new baby.

After days of conjecture where fans landed on Arthur, Albert, or Alexander as the most likely, the royal couple surprised by choosing Louis as the first name. This proved the theory that a glitch on the royal website had revealed the name to be Albert.

Kensington Palace announced the name on the official twitter.

They wrote, "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles."

They added, "The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge."

The name, which is pronounced Lou-ee not Lou-iss, was a bit of a surprise. Fans of the royal family didn't expect the new prince, who is fifth in line for the British throne, to be given a French name.

Louis shares his name with two people that are especially important to him. It is one of the middle names of his father Prince William and of his brother, Prince George.

It was also the first name of his great-great-great uncle Lord Mountbatten, who was killed by the IRA in 1979. Lord Mountbatten, who was the uncle of Prince Philip, was very important in the life of Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales had described him as "the grandfather I never had".

It's likely that the first name was chosen to honor him. Arthur is also one of the Prince William's middle names, and it was a middle name of Queen Elizabeth's father King George VI.

"But with its French and German origins, it will no doubt generate some eyebrow-raising, Brexit-related comment," added the BBC.

They also added that Historian Judith Rowbotham described Louis as "not a traditional Windsor name" and a "little surprising." However, she said it was "still a safe choice for the royals."

She continued, "It's very much an acknowledgement of a wider heritage," and "very much an affectionate tribute" to the Prince of Wales, who was "deeply devoted" to Lord Mountbatten.

After the announcement, former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson tweeted: "Young Louis welcome to the world. I'll take you under my wing lad. The Adidas tracksuit is in the post!"

Here's the background behind Princess Charlotte and Prince George's names. Did you know all of their middle names?
