Fans far and wide of the royal family have already endeared themselves to the arrival of Meghan Markle after she and Prince Harry married last month. But since then, she’s encountered a steep learning curve in observing customary royal protocol.
The former actress, 36, underwent a strict “princess-in-training” etiquette class ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry, according to Fox News. She’s learning, getting an “A” for doing her best. Here are the ways she’s broken royal decorum:
On one occasion, she forgot to wear tights when out in public. During their engagement last November, she and Prince Harry stepped out for a photocall in Kensington Palace. She wore a white coat and green dress but failed to cover her bare legs.
“You never see a royal without their nude stockings,” said a Royal expert Victoria Arbiter. “Meghan, from what I can see from the engagement photographs, it doesn’t look like she was wearing tights or stockings. I would say that’s really the only hard, steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires.”
On another occasion, she turned her back to the Queen to chat briefly with her husband. It is customary to face her when in public.
When Meghan attended her first Trooping the Colour with Prince Harry, she left her shoulders exposed. Fashion traditions in the royal family dictate that royal women do not wear clothing that reveals the shoulders or anything else.
In a separate occasion, during a trip to Cardiff, she signed autographs and took selfies. The Queen apparently is not big on selfies. Also, it is strictly forbidden that any member of the royal family scribbles their signature for other people.
Lastly, she gave a hug, even a high five, to kids on her trip to Wales in January. Royal family members would never do that. Comparatively, Princess Kate would give a hug only if a child dives for it; the Queen would usually give only a wave or a handshake.
