January 22nd marks a decade since Heath Ledger tragically died of an accidental overdose. That doesn't mean that he's been forgotten.
In an interview, his older sister says the actor is “very much alive in our house,” reported People.
Kate Ledger spoke about her brother's untimely death at only 28. She says that she's kept in touch with Ledger's ex-wife Michelle Williams and their 12-year-old daughter, Matilda.
“We keep in constant contact with Michelle and Matilda and visit frequently,” Kate said. “She is an amazing girl and a source of delight to us all.”
Although Kate's children were very young when Ledger passed, Kate says they still remember their uncle/ Even though he passed early, he's still apart of their lives.
“Heath is hugely important in the lives of my children,” she shared. “There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t share stories or talk about him. He is very much alive in our house.”
She also shared that her children have been able to get to know their uncle through his television appearances and movies. She revealed that it's difficult for her, but it's also a blessing for them.
“It’s especially difficult to see his moving images on screen and hear his voice—something which we as a family have had to learn to cope with constantly,” she said. “But it’s a blessing that we have all the images and footage so that we can share a part of him with our girls.”
Heath's passing was especially sad for Kate, who had a close relationship with her brother. She called him her "soul mate."
“We spoke almost every day regardless of where Heath was in the world or what he was doing,” she recalled. “Our conversations ranged from talking about projects to what we were having for dinner! Nothing was off limits.”
Even while Heath was filming "The Dark Knight," which many theorize caused the Australian actor to recede to a dark place and eventually led to his accidental overdose, Kate said he was himself.
“The Dark Knight was the most fun Heath has ever had on a film set,” she said. “He would send me rushes of the scenes and we would laugh about what he was going to do with the character.”
Kate and her family later accepted Heath’s posthumous Oscar for the role in 2009. She called that “a surreal but calm experience.”
“I honestly didn’t know how I was going to get up but when the time came, we all felt a strong sense of peace and strength,” she revealed. “We definitely felt Heath’s presence.”
Naomi Watts, who dated Ledger from 2002 to 2004, also paid tribute to the actor. She took to Instagram to share a picture of him and a touching caption.
"Thinking about this beautiful soul today. 10 years ago he left this world. He was a true original. Heart always on his sleeve, with the most powerful charisma, strength, humor and talent. I will never forget his gentle spirit. ❤️ #heathledger 📷 @wattsupphoto"
