On Wednesday morning, the Danish Palace confirmed some heartbreaking news: the nation’s Prince has passed away. Prince Henrik, the husband of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, passed away at the age of 83.
According to the Danish Royal House, Prince Henrik died “peacefully in his sleep” on Tuesday night. He passed away at around 11:18 p.m. at Fredensborg Castle just north of Copenhagen.
According to the report, Prince Henrik’s wife, the Queen, and their two sons were by his side at the time of his death.
The prince’s passing was not a surprise to his family, as his health had been rapidly worsening. Last summer, the prince was hospitalized twice. Later, it was revealed that he had been diagnosed with dementia.
At the time, the family’s statement said, “It is with deep regret that Her Majesty The Queen has asked the Lord Chamberlain to announce: Following a longer course of investigation, and most recently, a series of examinations conducted during late summer, a team of specialists at Rigshospitalet has now concluded that His Royal Highness Prince Henrik suffers from dementia.”
At the end of January, his condition worsened. A tumor was discovered on his left lung.
The tumor was benign, but Prince Henrik was also fighting a pulmonary infection. He was originally sent to Rigshospitalet hospital but was later transferred to his home, the Fredensborg Castle, to spend his final days.
The Palace released information about Prince Henrik’s poor health in the beginning of February when his son, Crown Prince Frederik, canceled a trip to South Korea in order to be with his father.
Last August, Prince Henrik announced that he did not want to be buried with the Royals at Roskilde Cathedral. He said that he honors the fact that his wife is the Queen, but that as husband and wife, they are equal.
At the time, the palace said, “The Queen has for some time been familiar with the decision of His Royal Highness and acknowledges the decision. The Prince’s decision does not change the Queen’s funeral plans. The Prince’s wish to be buried in Denmark remains, but the circumstances are not yet in place.”
At this point, funeral arrangements have not been revealed. Please be praying for Prince Henrik’s family as they walk through this grieving process. Share your prayers here! In other recent news, shots were just fired right outside of the National Security Agency and one person has been taken into custody.
