A sad and strange story is making headlines around the nation after a healthy dog was euthanized. Now, some people are upset after the details behind the euthanization have been revealed.

According to reports, a woman wished dot be buried with her pet. After including her final wish in her will, the animal shelter decided to grant it to her.

"The owner of Emma, a Shih Tzu mix, died March 8. Her dog was held at the Chesterfield Animal Shelter before it was picked up March 22 and then euthanized," NBC affiliate WWBT in Richmond first reported.

The shelter said they were absolutely devastated over the news. They said they had previously tried to change the mind of the executor of the state but ultimate were unsuccessful.

“We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home,” Chesterfield Animal Services manager Carrie Jones told WWBT. “Ultimately, they came back in on March 22 and redeemed the dog.”

The story created a firestorm online. Many animal advocates were furious over the story since the animal was killed even though it was still a healthy dog. The Humane Society of the United States spoke out and stated they oppose the killing of an animal if there is a means for adoption.

“It is a heartbreaking situation," Humane Society Vice President Amy Nichols said in a statement. "While we don’t know the specifics of this case, as a general matter, we don’t support the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable animals when other alternatives exist, such as re-homing of the pet."
