Over the weekend, several horrible shootings took place. On Saturday, a man shot and killed an employee in Trader Joe’s while holding several people hostage. On Sunday, a gunman opened fire on the streets of Toronto, Canada, leaving 2 dead and over a dozen injured.
Now, another sad report has been confirmed. A 48-year-old man, John Kelley O’Connor, walked into a Mormon church on Sunday and shot and killed one person and wounded another.
According to Yahoo!, the shooting took place in Fallon, Nevada at a Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. He walked into the church and opened fire, surrounded by around 50 witnesses. Sadly, a 61-year-old man, Charles E. Miller, was killed.
O’Connor was reportedly a member of the church and had been attending services. According to a press release, the motive has not yet been determined but police say that it appears the target was against the individual, not necessarily the church.
Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford said, “Our hearts go out to family members of those who have lost someone and those who were in the church today where the tragedy occurred.”
Following the shooting, O’Connor went home, where police followed him. A hostage negotiator was eventually able to negotiate his surrender.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said, “Devastated by the horrific news of the fatal shooting at the LDS church in Fallon. Thank you to the first responders on the scene. My heart goes out to all of those impacted. Places of worship should be a safe haven. The gun violence across this country must end.”
Sen. Dean Heller said, “Deeply saddened by the act of senseless violence in Fallon today at the LDS church. We are in contact with Mayor Tedford and other officials. My family and I are praying for all loved ones, churchgoers, and community members impacted by this tragedy.”
