Disney is supposed to be the happiest place on the planet. Millions of people go to the theme park each year in an effort to enjoy the festivities and have a good time with their family.
Sadly, the trip ended poorly for one woman. A North Carolina great-grandmother is now making headline news after she was arrested for something found in her purse.
Hester Burkhalter, 69, was arrested and spent eight hours in jail after security outside the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, found the CBD oil on April 15, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
Now, she is speaking out. She says she was shocked by the way they treated her.
“I have really bad arthritis in my legs and in my arms and in my shoulder and I use it for the pain because it helps,” she told the outlet, adding that she had a doctor’s note in her purse.
The CBD oil tested positive for THC, the chemical responsible for the "high" in marijuana. Authorities booked the grandmother on third-degree felony charges of possession of hashish, according to the affidavit.
After the story was investigated, the charges were dropped. Sadly, Burkhalter's trip was officially ruined. She now has a lawyer and they are speaking out on the case.
“Why Sheriff Mina would support his deputies using their resources for a CBD oil arrest of a 69-year-old woman, but then won’t do anything about the gas stations, health food stores, drug stores, etc. that are selling it to the open public is absolutely beyond my comprehension,” she said.
Disney World spokespersons did not respond to request for comment from PEOPLE.
