A shocking and disturbing story is making headlines all across the globe after it was first reported. According to local police, an elderly man has died after the terrible actions of his family.

Police in South Carolina are now reporting that James Boyd Chewning, who was a former pastor for more than 50 years, is now dead at the age of 79. However, it is the manner in which he died that's disturbing.

Police say his own granddaughters have been arrested for abusing the vulnerable adult and that their actions resulted in his death. They are accused of zip-tying him to a bed, covering his mouth and eyes with duct tape, and beating him.

“The victim was battered, restrained to a bed using zip ties and rags and duct tape were used to cover the victim’s mouth and eyes,” the affidavit states.

The victim, Rev. James, lived with his children and his grandchildren. The parents have also been charged with abusing an elderly and vulnerable adult and are awaiting trial. At this time, none of the family has moved forward with a defense.

Authorities in South Carolina have arrested two women in the death last November of their grandfather, who was a retired pastor, PEOPLE confirms.

Please join us in praying for all of those affected by this case. May God's grace comfort those dealing with this tragedy and may we gain comfort knowing that Rev. James is in heaven and finally at peace.
