It is becoming more and more normal to see same-sex relationships in Hollywood. But it is less normal to see them with a self-professing Christian--and a prominent gospel singer, no less.
That is why Bravo's “Below Deck Mediterranean” star Sandy Yawn (known as Captain Sandy to viewers) and gospel singer Leah Shafer's relationship has made headlines.
The pair met last fall, after Shafer sent Yawn a message on Facebook, shares Fox News. “She sent me a nice message that said, ‘I came across your show, congratulations, many blessings,'” Yawn said, noting Schafer’s line of “many blessings” really spoke to her.
“It was definitely unexpected,” Shafer explained of their relationship. “It just happened, when you meet another soul that you connect with at such a deep level, it is unexplainable and so beautiful.”
It was probably quite unexpected to Shafer's husband of 20 years, Ross Shafer. Leah Schafer's professional website still describes them as married, having a 13-year-old daughter. In fact, there are a few things that may need updating on her site, such as her description of praying as a family to avoid temptation:
“I am always growing, learning and changing through the help of the Lord. His grace and strength and prayer has saved me many times.” says Leah. She is a strong believer that you should never get too comfortable in this life because that is when you will be spiritually attacked. “We must always be on guard with your heart and spirit.” That is why she is such a huge proponent of family unity and praying together (daily) as a couple and family. Leah is emphatic, “Through my faith, nothing is impossible.”
But as for Shafer, she doesn't seem to care about the apparent discrepancies between what the Bible says and what she says God feels. Responding to the backlash she has received from "religious institutions," Shafer said, “I think you can’t help who you fall in love with. God is love. He doesn’t care,” she defended.
Shafer also says she bonded with Yawn over their shared ministry passion: "She has a passion for inspiring through music and the youth. And broken people and so do I coming from the gospel industry. That’s what brought us together,” Shafer said. “And then, of course, the attraction and falling in love with a beautiful soul and knowing you want to be with someone forever. I’ve never felt that way before.”
Time will tell about the forever part. As for the now, what do you think of gospel singer Schafer's same-sex relationship with TV star Yawn? Share your thoughts in the comments! We love hearing what you think. Thank you!
