Openly gay Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon made national news recently when he declined an invitation to sit with Vice President Mike Pence, who traveled to PyeongChang, South Korea for the opening ceremonies of the White Olympics last Friday.
According to host Whoopi Goldberg on “The View,” Rippon refused the invite because “he says Pence funded gay conversion therapy in the past, which Pence says is not true.”
“But should they have a sit-down?” Whoopi continued. “Should [Rippon] talk to this gentleman who doesn’t even, sort of, recognize him as a person?”
After reading off a list of examples when Pence did not advocate for the homosexual lifestyle, Whoopi remarked, “I think it would be like asking a Jewish person to sit down and understand where the Nazi is coming from.”
Co-host Joy Behar jumped onboard her analogy and said that speaking to a Nazi “can show a what a devil the Nazi is. It exposes them.”
But not everyone liked Whoopi’s comparison of Pence to a member of Adolf Hitler’s party. An openly gay columnist even wrote a piece for Tablet magazine blasting “The View” host for what she said and defending the vice president.
While definitely not a fan of Pence or the Trump administration, James Kirchick said Whoopi’s comparison was an example of “moral idiocy.” Here’s a snippet of what he wrote:
“A gay man meeting with the Vice President of the United States is not like a Jew hobnobbing with a Nazi. To start, the evangelical Christian Mike Pence does not insist that gay-owned shops be boycotted. (Actually, it’s gay activists advocating that some evangelical Christian-owned shops be boycotted, but leave that inconvenient fact aside for the moment).
“Mike Pence does not allege that a worldwide conspiracy of homosexuals is bent on destroying humanity. He also does not refer to gay people as ‘vermin.’
“Nor, most significantly as far as this particular analogy is concerned, does Mike Pence believe that the United States government should track down every single last gay man, woman and child on earth, crowd them into ghettoes, herd them onto cattle cars, ship them off to concentration camps, force them to subsist on starvation rations, and gas them in a process of industrial-scale extermination the likes of which the world has never seen since, well, that thing called the Holocaust.”
He also likened Whoopi’s comparison to the blindness that has led the mainstream media to fawn over Kim Jong-un’s sister’s “diplomatic” appearance at the South Korean Olympics.
What do you think about this? In other news, there has been an attack on the Olympics in South Korea, and it’s not yet known who is behind it
