Thankfully, we haven't yet seen Christian persecution in America to the lengths of the martyrdom Christians are experiencing around the world. However, what Berkeley student Isabella Chow is experiencing can definitely be likened to social martyrdom.
The student senator recently abstained from voting for a bill that would oppose President Trump's change to federal Title IV funding which defines gender and funds school programs related to gender. Under Obama, the gender definitions were widened to 72 different genders, and his administration funded various LGBT groups within schools. Obama's administration also sought to intimidate schools into having genderless bathrooms and locker rooms, lest they get funding revoked.
Trump, quite conversely, is planning to define gender solely by biological sex. Of course, to a liberal university like Berkeley with a strong LGBT student body population, this is highly offensive.
But what may be more offensive to the school is Chow's statement for why she was the only senator to abstain for voting Yes against Trump's bill. "“As a Christian, I personally do believe that certain acts and lifestyles conflict with what is good, right and true,” she said. “I believe that God created male and female at the beginning of time, and designed sex for marriage between one man and one woman. For me, to love another person does not mean that I silently concur when, at the bottom of my heart, I do not believe that your choices are right or the best for you as an individual.”
Now, Chow is under incredible heat for her statements and is being asked to resign. An entire student body meeting was called where hundreds rallied against Chow, calling her a bigot and demanding she step down.
“I am Christian. I am queer. And I am ‘good, right and true,’” a student named Miranda said. “And I demand Senator Chow to resign!”
Franklin Graham took to Facebook to stand with Chow and tagged President Trump in his appeal, so that he could be informed of the brave student standing with the President and ultimately, with God, against the onslaught of an angry, liberal mob.
"Isabella Chow’s faith is under fire," began Graham's post. "As a student at UC Berkeley, Isabella serves on the student senate. The student government was asked by the school’s 'Queer Alliance Resource Center' to pass a bill opposing the Trump administration’s proposed changes to Title IX to define gender as a person’s sex at birth. Isabella abstained from the vote and explained publicly that she couldn’t support the bill because she believes that God created man and woman, and that marriage should only be between a man and a woman."
"That is bold in the progressive, liberal environment of UC Berkeley, and now Isabella is really taking heat for it," shared Graham. "They are circulating a petition demanding that she resign. Students have called her a 'horrible person' and a 'mental imbecile'—all because she is a Christian voicing her biblical convictions. There seems to be zero tolerance for Christians—and for the truth of Jesus Christ."
"Isabella is right when she said, 'I can love you and still disagree with you.' Pray for Isabella and other Christian students operating in the hostile environments of many of today’s secular university campuses. I hope you’ll take a minute to drop her a note of encouragement in the comments below and let her know you prayed for her," urged Graham.
As for now, Chow is courageously refusing to step down, shares the San Francisco Chronicle. “No, I’m not planning to resign,” Chow said, even after hours of being criticized in the public Senate session. “Because if I do, there will be no one else to represent the voices that are ignored and misunderstood on campus.”
Wow. What an example! Can we all stand with her, as Graham suggested? Post your prayer and encouragement for Chow in the comments. She could really use it right now!
