The NFL recently rejected an ad submitted by American Veterans that urged people to stand for the national anthem. According to Fox News, the NFL had previously invited the organization to place an ad in the Super Bowl LII program.
American Veterans have accused the NFL of censorship by rejecting the ad, which contained a two-word message: #PleaseStand.
“It’s a simple, polite request that represents the sentiment of our membership, particularly those whose missing or paralyzed limbs preclude standing,” National Commander Marion Polk wrote in a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
In response, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy defended the NFL’s decision, saying that the gameday program “is designed for fans to commemorate and celebrate the game, players, teams and the Super Bowl.”
He added, “It’s never been a place for advertising that could be considered by some as a political statement.”
Franklin Graham, in turn, shared his response through his Facebook page. In it, he criticized the NFL for its position on the ad.
“I’m baffled. How can they reject an ad promoting our national anthem? The NFL refused to run a print ad from American Veterans (AMVETS) in the official Super Bowl program because of its two-word message—“Please Stand.” They said it was too “political.” I’m sorry, but that’s the wrong word,” he wrote.
Graham said no unclear terms his belief that standing for the anthem isn’t a political statement. It’s an act of patriotism.
“Standing for the anthem isn’t political, it’s patriotic. Patriotism and love of country should be valued…even cherished. The very same ad was accepted by the NHL and the NBA. What’s wrong with the NFL?”
He finished his post by issuing a challenge to the fans who will attend the Super Bowl. In Franklin Graham’s eyes, Super Bowl Sunday would be a great time to express one’s patriotism.
“On #SuperBowl Sunday I hope everyone in the entire stadium will #PleaseStand in honor of our nation and the men and women who defend the freedoms we enjoy!”
