You can only imagine the heat around this guy. Democratic governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, is defying his party with one of the most important issues of our time.
Abortion. The word has become almost synonymous with the Democratic Party, and yet the Louisiana governor is poised to sign one of the nation's most stringent abortion bans, which also quite shockingly, was sponsored by another Democrat, Rep. Katrina Jackson.
The Washington Post cites that fellow Democrats nationwide "see it as a betrayal in the battle over abortion rights." But Bel Edwards does not care. In a powerful statement with biblical undertones, Governor Bel Edwards said, “As I prepare to sign this bill, I call on the overwhelming bipartisan majority of legislators who voted for it to join me in continuing to build a better Louisiana that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone.”
Similarly, the bill's sponsor, a deeply religious Democrat, said she would not bow to party lines: “I don’t believe in being a cookie-cutter legislator, which means, you say, ‘Oh, what’s the party doing?’ Jackson said. “When you have a sincerely held belief, you stand for that belief. That doesn’t mean you abandon your party. That doesn’t mean that you abandon anyone. That means that you understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to legislature doesn’t work."
Franklin Graham heartily applauded both Democrats' boldness and integrity on Facebook today, saying he respected their stance and prayed more politicians would follow suit.
"Good news," Graham announced. "Today the Louisiana’s state legislature passed one of the nation’s most life-affirming, child-protective abortion bans, and their Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, says he will sign it despite his party’s support of abortion. He said he’s 'pro-life for the whole life' and I respect that. Sadly today, 'three-quarters of Democrats believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases,' according to this Washington Post article."
"Democratic Rep. Katrina Jackson sponsored the state’s heartbeat bill and is also going against her party—because of her deeply held religious beliefs," shared Graham. "I appreciate these leaders who are bold enough to stand up to protect innocent lives. I hope our country is waking up to the truth that abortion is murder. It’s the termination of any innocent life; it’s stopping a beating heart."
"Let’s pray that God will work in more politicians’ hearts and they will decide to defend life. Thank you Governor John Bel Edwards and the LA legislators who supported this bill," ended Graham's appreciation, tagging the Louisiana governor so he could know of Graham's deep thanks.
What do you think of the boldness of these two pro-life Democrats and the backlash they are and will continue to face because of it? Share your thoughts and prayers in the comments! Thank you!
