President Trump just announced an aggressive set of abortion restrictions that will be applicable immediately. Family planning clinics will now be barred from referring women for abortions. If they do so, they will lose their funding.
This bold move is seen as a direct hit on Planned Parenthood, who greatly benefits from the abortion referrals. In fact, effective next year, abortion clinics will not allowed to be under the safe roof as family planning clinics. Trump's administration is taking strong measures to separate the two entities, instead of it being a streamlined customer process, as it is now.
Planned Parenthood President Leana Wen was obviously on the defense, saying "our doors are still open" as her organization tries to overturn the regulations in federal court. "We will not stop fighting for all those across the country in need of essential care," Wen said.
But pro-lifers think there is nothing "essential" about abortion as medical care. "Ending the connection between abortion and family planning is a victory for common-sense health care," Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, said in a statement.
Franklin Graham, an unwavering pro-life leader, spoke out in favor of Trump's controversial move today on Facebook. The bold evangelist showed it as proof of Trump's original promise to pro-life voters.
"Yesterday the Trump administration announced that taxpayer-funded family planning clinics have to stop referring women for abortions immediately," wrote Graham, tagging President Trump. "That means clinics receiving family planning grants to provide contraception and other services to women will have to stop providing abortion referrals—or lose their funding! That puts some teeth in it."
"Planned Parenthood is the major abortion provider that this impacts," explained Graham. "President Donald J. Trump has kept his word to protect the unborn and stand for life. I am grateful for an administration that is making a difference for our country in this way. God’s Word says, 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…' (Jeremiah 1:5)."
