A former defensive end from the NFL sadly passed away on Friday, November 24th. John Thierry from the Chicago Bears was only 46 years old at the time of his passing.
Thierry was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears back in 1994. According to the Chicago Tribune, he was the 11th overall pick and spent five wonderful seasons with the team.
After his final season with the Bears, he played an additional four years with the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, and Green Bay Packers. His most successful time in the NFL was with the Browns in 1999—the ex-defense star had seven sacks and 33 tackles, stated ESPN.
Before making it big in the NFL, he played college football at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. His alma mater released an official statement on Saturday.
Fans and others in the sports industry also took to social media to express their condolences including the Chicago Bears.
One of his previous teammates, James Williams, told the Tribune that this was a complete “shock.” Williams had reportedly hung out with Thierry recently and he appeared to be in good health.
Initially, a cause of death was not released to the public. However, the Sun Times later revealed that Thierry unexpectedly died of a heart attack.
