According to her office, First lady Melania Trump underwent kidney surgery Monday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington, DC, reported CNN

They revealed that Melania Trump had been experiencing an issue with her kidney. They described it as "benign" but requiring medical attention.

On Monday, the 48-year-old FLOTUS entered Walter Reed in nearby Bethesda, Maryland. She is expected to remain hospitalized for several days following the operation, according to the statement from her communications director, Stephanie Grisham.

She is the first US first lady to undergo such a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan had a mastectomy in October 1987, reported CNN.

Two other First Ladies also had major surgery. Rosalynn Carter underwent surgery to remove a benign lump from her breast in April 1977. In September 1974, Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy.

According to CBS, the procedure was successful. It was an "embolization procedure" to treat a benign kidney condition, the White House said Monday. They also said, "there were no complications."

"Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week.  The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere," the statement added.
