It can be easy to forget that Moses, who led his people out of Egypt and received the Ten Commandments from God, felt unqualified to lead.
It's likely that he had a speech impediment. The Book of Exodus describes Moses as "slow of speech" and "slow of tongue." In Christian theater Sight & Sound's musical version of the iconic tale, Moses has a pronounced stutter that appears when he's angry or passionate.
God doesn't pass Moses over because he's not the most eloquent of His people. Instead, He gives Moses' brother Aaron the gift of speaking well. Together, they do God's work.
It's a message that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt like they aren't qualified to spread the message of God. That might be because they feel like they lack the words, the charisma, or because—like Moses—they can't get their mouths to cooperate.
God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
Sight & Sound's engaging adaptation of the Book of Exodus brings to life the story of Moses. It spans from Moses floating down the Nile river in a basket made of reeds to him receiving the Ten Commandments from God.
The musical features original songs that draw the viewer in and move the plot along. One of the most charming moments is the song where Moses meets his future wife, Zipporah.
The musical also excels in its emphasis on God's love and mercy. Before he finally accepts God's mission for him, Moses feels immobilized by the pressure of guilt and the burden of disability. MOSES beautifully illustrates what God can do when you allow Him to work through you.
While the experience of going to a Sight & Sound theater in person cannot be replicated in a movie theater, it comes close. While you won't be able to snack on their famous glazed almonds while you watch, the show will still be thoroughly enjoyed with popcorn and candy instead.
For three days only—Thursday, September 13, Saturday, September 15, and Thursday, September 20—families have the opportunity to watch MOSES, which was filmed in front of a live audience at Sight & Sound Theatres.
MOSES is suitable for the entire family. Watch the trailer below for a glimpse of this amazing show.
