FB Responds To Censorship Accusations

Does Facebook censor what you see in your news feed and in the trending section? Many have suspected (particularly conservatives) that the social media giant has thwarted the success of conservative and faith-based stories that didn't jive with a progressive, liberal mindset.

Now a former Facebook worker is saying that it's true. Fox News shares, "Several unnamed former Facebook 'news curators' told Gizmodo that they were told to artificially 'inject' certain stories into the trending news section, even if they weren’t popular enough to justify inclusion. In some cases the stories weren’t even trending at all, according to the report." The #BlackLivesMatter movement was one such example of a story allegedly "injected" into the trending section of Facebook.

But Facebook is denying such claims, saying that there is no proof of such tampering. Facebook's VP of Search, Tom Stocky (who oversees trending topics), said in an immediate response, “We take these reports extremely seriously, and have found no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true."

Stocky continued by saying that they have made it very hard for moderators to censor content. “We have in place strict guidelines for our trending topic reviewers as they audit topics surfaced algorithmically: reviewers are required to accept topics that reflect real world events, and are instructed to disregard junk or duplicate topics, hoaxes, or subjects with insufficient sources,” he wrote.

“Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any ideological origin and we've designed our tools to make that technically not feasible.”
