After almost 100 years of a similar type of competition, the Miss America Organization has made a major announcement. They have revealed that they will be changing several aspects of their competition.

On Tuesday’s episode of “Good Morning America,” the head of the organization’s board of trustees, Gretchen Carlson, made the announcement that Miss America will no longer be considered as a pageant. Carlson, a former Miss America herself, said that they no longer want to judge contestants based on appearance, but rather based on interests,  charity work, character, and talent.

Because of this move, Miss America will no longer include a swimsuit section as part of the competition. While the evening gown section will remain, Fox News reported that the gown portion is also being increasingly viewed as outdated.

This is major news for the Miss America Organization, especially because the entire competition began as an actual swimsuit competition nearly 100 years ago. Now, Carlson has announced that they don’t want to focus on appearance anymore.

She said, “We’re not going to judge you on your appearance because we are interested in what makes you-you.”

Carlson said that she has heard from many contestants, “We don’t want to be out there in high heels and swimsuits.” To that, she replied, “Guess what? You don’t have to anymore.”

In the interview, Carlson was asked if she thought the show’s ratings would suffer from this elimination. She said that she hoped not and that it is not the highest viewed portion of the competition anyway. She noted that fans seem to be more interested in the talent section.

While the evening gown portion of the competition will remain, Carlson noted that judges will focus more on what the contestants are saying rather than what they are wearing.

All of the above changes will take place beginning on September 9.  After the announcement was made, several Americans began to speak out about it, both positively and negatively.
