Fans, Insiders Speculate About Matt Lauer's Replacement, Here Are Top Options

November 29, 2017Nov 29, 2017

Early Wednesday morning, NBC News announced that they have fired “Today” news anchor Matt Lauer. The surprising removal came after a detailed complaint of sexual assault was filed against Lauer on Monday night.

The network released a statement, explaining that the behavior was inappropriate and that it was a “clear violation of our company’s standards.” They also said that it may not have been an isolated incident.

Since the news broke, many colleagues and fans have taken to Twitter to share their opinions. A natural question that has occurred has been, “Who will replace Matt Lauer?”

According to Entertainment Weekly, there are a few top candidates who have been mentioned by fans and insiders as potential replacements.

One of the main names that has circulated around Twitter this morning is Ann Curry. After her departure from the network in 2012 due to a “strained relationship” with Lauer, fans are saying that she should get her hosting job back.

Another popular name is Willie Geist, the co-anchor of “Morning Joe” on MSNBC and the anchor of “Sunday TODAY.” This could be a likely pick for the network because he has filled in for Lauer in the past and is familiar with the show.

Other names include Megyn Kelly, Craig Melvin, and Tamron Hall, though these choices seem less likely to be chosen as Lauer’s replacement. Anderson Cooper has been mentioned several times as it was once rumored that he would be taking Lauer’s spot several years ago. However, he is in a “long-term” contract and therefore may be unavailable.

Carson Daily has been mentioned as another option, though it is unclear whether NBC would give the role to someone that does not have quite as much news experience as other candidates.

The final names that have been briefly mentioned are John Berman from CNN, Thomas Roberts from MSNBC, Andy Cohen from Bravo, and Pat Kiernan from New York 1.
