A famous religious leader has died at the age of 80. Cardinal Keith O'Brien, one of the leaders of the Catholic Church in Scotland, has passed away.
O'Brien died after succumbing to injuries he received during a terrible fall about a month ago. He broke his collar bone and suffered major head injuries in the incident. He was being treated at a local hospital in Newcastle when he passed away.
In recent years, O'Brien was under major scrutiny for allegations that he acted inappropriately in the past. Numerous priests accused him of the misconduct, dating back to the 1980s.
“To those I have offended, I apologize and ask forgiveness. To the Catholic Church and people of Scotland, I also apologize,” O'Brien said.
"In 2015, the Vatican announced that Francis accepted O’Brien’s renunciation of all the rights and privileges associated with being a cardinal - including the right to participate in any future conclave. However, O’Brien remained a cardinal in name, keeping his title," according to reports.
O'Brien had last rites administered to him on Friday, the same day as his 80th birthday. Church leaders have now asked for prayers for his soul.
“In life, Cardinal O’Brien may have divided opinion - in death, however, I think all can be united in praying for the repose of his soul, for comfort for his grieving family and that support and solace be given to those whom he hurt and let down. May he rest in peace,” the archbishop said.
