Banksy has been considered one of the most impactful artists of the last several decades. Now, the infamous street artist has captivated an audience once again in an unusual twist of events.
One of Banksy’s iconic images, “Girl With Balloon,” recently sold at an auction at Sotheby’s in London. The framed painting sold for a remarkable $1.4 million.
In a shocking turn of events, moments after the painting was purchased, it began to self-destruct. According to Rolling Stone, as soon as the winning bid was placed an alarm began sounding within the canvas. Then, the canvas “began to pass through a shredder hidden in the frame.”
Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director wrote, “It appears we just got Banksy-ed.”
Sotheby’s also released a statement regarding the buyer of the painting.
They wrote, “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps.”
Banksy took to Instagram to post about the art.
He wrote, “Going, going, gone…”
Sotheby’s noted that the prank “became instant art world history and certainly marks the first time in auction history that work of art automatically shredded itself after coming under the hammer.”
Below is the video of the aftermath of the auction when everyone begins taking pictures of the shredded masterpiece.
