A famous member of Congress has passed away. According to reports, Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-NY, has died at age 88.
Slaughter had previously been hospitalized after a terrible fall. She suffered a concussion and now reports state she has succumbed to her injuries.
The top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, where she had served as chair between 2007 and 2009, she was running for re-election in the fall. She has been a member of Congress since 1987.
“She was a relentless advocate for Western New York whose visionary leadership brought infrastructure upgrades, technology, and research investments, and two federal manufacturing institutes to Rochester that will transform the local economy for generations to come,” her Chief of Staff said in a statement.
Slaughter was born in Kentucky but represented New York state. She was the first woman in history to represent Western New York in Congress.
