The former lead singer of the R&B group, Tower of Power, passed away at the age of 77. Rick Stevens died after battling cancer in his final days.

"Rick Stevens went to heaven today to be with the Lord whom he loved with all his heart," Emilio Castillo said in a long post. "Rick was an extremely soulful singer and entertainer who had an engaging personality and a strong faith which he shared with all he came in contact with."

For most people, Stevens is known as the former lead singer of the band. He was also known for being a convicted murderer who spent 36 years in prison.

Stevens was convicted of killing three people in 1976 after a drug deal went south. In 2012, he was released on parole. However, Stevens reportedly used his freedom to spread the message of faith in God and redemption to lots of people.

“I remember talking with him when he was released and I was skeptical about his ‘prison salvation’ experience,” Emilio Castillo, the current bandleader, posted Tuesday. “I told him that I really hoped he would take advantage of the tremendous opportunity that God had given him to help people to avoid the pitfalls he had fallen into. He went above and beyond the call of duty and carried his message of faith and redemption to many.”
