Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the “Avengers” movies just opened up about his marriage. Hemsworth has been married to Elsa Pataky since 2010, and he shared that keeping their marriage together has taken work.
In a new interview with GQ Australia, the actor told the interviewer that he and his model wife haven’t always been perfectly in synch. Struggles appeared when Hemsworth’s career took off, leading to a busy work schedule in the United States while Pataky was back at home in Australia.
“My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn’t really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love,” said Hemsworth in the interview.
Hemsworth also revealed that his wife has had to give up her career so that he could pursue his career. Hemsworth has had overwhelming success in recent years.
“In terms of work, [Elsa has] certainly given up more than I have. She’d like me to step back and be at home with the kids more, and of course, I want that too. But I feel like I’m at this crucial point in my career—I’ve just got to set up for longevity or I’ll slip off.”
Even though he said there were years when they didn’t really see each other—presumably because of his busy filming schedule—the actor, 34, says the secret to their seven-year marriage is making quality time together a priority.
The couple has three children together, India, 5, and twins Tristan and Sasha, 3. That means they have to make their quality time intentional.
“Once you have children, every instinct and every moment of your time is consumed by that. You’ve got nothing for each other,” he says. “So, make sure you have date night even if it’s once in a blue moon, because most of the time you’re just too tired and you’d actually prefer to sleep.”
When asked if he ever writes his wife letters to make up for the physical distance, the Thor actor replied in the negative.
“I don’t, but maybe I should. There’s no shortage of how much I tell her I love her. But I guess there’s no detail in it, why or how,” he adds.
Hemsworth seems to know the value of letters. He mused about how letters had played a part in his parents’ successful marriage.
“My mum tells this story about when she was younger and had been married to my dad for years. He’d write her an articulate and detailed letter and she said, ‘I remember thinking, oh, wow he loves me, which is so stupid, because I knew he loved me’. But when it was said with that much depth, it struck a different chord.”
Despite their problems, Hemsworth is confident he and his wife are going to make it. In the past, he talked about how he knew Pataky was the one, says People.
“There was no light bulb moment,” he told Elle in 2015. “From the first time we met, we just made sense. She’s fun. She’s outgoing, and she has a sense of humor and a passionate attitude toward life, which is nice to try to keep up with.”
