Bethany Hamilton just revealed that she’s expecting her second child! People reported the news on Monday.
Hamilton, a professional surfer who lost an arm to a shark attack in 2003, and her husband, Adam Dirks, announced the pregnancy in an Instagram video. The video featured their adorable 2-year-old son, Tobias.
In the video, Dirks asked Tobias where the baby was. He replied by running over to his mother.
“Right there!” declared Tobias, who proceeded to kiss his mother’s stomach.
“Another one on the way!” said Dirks to the camera.
Hamilton added, “Baby in there!”
Hamilton, 27, was the subject of the 2011 movie “Soul Surfer” starring AnnaSophia Robb, and she shared her struggle in a new documentary “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.”
The documentary describes the horrific 2003 shark attack and the aftermath. In the attack, Hamilton lost her left arm.
Most people would have given up on their surfing dreams, but not Hamilton. She refused to be deterred; she not only got back in the water, but she also became one of the leading professional surfers of all time.
But Hamilton doesn’t think that’s the only journey that matters. She also recounted how important her marriage and her family is to her.
“I’ve always been competitive with myself and I’ve always tried to be the best I can be, but getting married and having a son has completely changed things,” she said. “I’ve had such incredible support from my husband and my son.”
Hamilton told People that having Tobias shifted her priorities. She focused more on his well-being than she did on sustained practice time.
“Having a baby, you pretty much have to plan ahead everything, especially [since I’m] nursing him. I’m attached to him in a sense because I have to nurse him every two to three hours,” she explained. “So I’ll feed him and go surf for a little bit, and try to get back in time or sometimes we’ll pump a bottle and my husband will take over.”
She added, “[It’s] definitely such a big adjustment. Even surfing, I’ll just be thinking of him. I’ll get back from the beach and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve missed you, little guy!’”
As the couple adds another little one, there will be another adjustment. Congratulations to Bethany, Adam, and Tobias, and prayers for a healthy pregnancy and baby!
