‘Fake news’ has been a hot topic lately with President Trump calling out certain mainstream media outlets, such as CNN and the New York Times, for reporting false information.
Late last year, Facebook made a promise to help their social media users identify real news from fake news.
Facebook’s promise has been fulfilled. They have begun ‘flagging’ articles believed to be from a fake news source with assistance from fact checkers including ABC News, Politifact and Snopes.
Articles containing false information will be detected by user reporting and/or Facebook algorithms.
If an article is classified as ‘fake news’, two things will happen:
1. It will be flagged with a ‘disputed’ marking and a link to fact checkers as to why the article was classified that way.
2. Facebook blocks paid promotion of the article.
What do you think of Facebook’s new feature trying to help users identify fake news?
