Come on, Barbie, let’s go party! The live-action approach to the story behind the iconic doll line has been long in the making.
The BarbieOriginal plan was to have movie rewritten by Diablo CodyWith Amy Schumeras the lead role. Cody spoke out about the difficulties that came with bringing the iteration to fruition after the writer left the project.
“I never even produced an initial draft. I was so frustrated with that project. I was literally unable to write. Barbie script. God knows I tried,” the Jennifer’s BodyScreenwriter telling Screen Crush2018. “To be honest, the timeline coincided with my writing Tully. I was overwhelmed at the time and was unable to reach in and pull out something very personal. I think the idea that a Barbie movie is super f–king cool and I hope something goes in there and kills it.”
Months after Schumer’s casting was announced, the comedian also dropped out, citing scheduling conflicts. Later, Schumer clarified that her participation was halted by creative differences.
“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” Schumer told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2022, noting that she wanted the character to be an “ambitious inventor” but it was turned down.
The Last Comic StandingThe alum claimed that Barbie had in mind to invent high heels made from Jell-O. “I felt like I was disappointing my team by not being Barbie,” Schumer admitted at the time. “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”
Following Schumer’s exit, Margot RobbieThe role of Barbie was taken over by her. Greta GerwigAnd Noah BaumbachLater, they joined forces to write the script together and work behind the scenes to bring the story to life.
Robbie teased during an interview ahead of production The Hollywood Reporter in 2020 that Barbie will be “the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”
