A massive controversy erupted this week after a British woman, who left the U.K. as a teen to join in with ISIS in the Middle East, wanted to return to her homeland. The issue caused major concerns among people in the United Kingdom.
"I'm not the same silly little 15-year-old schoolgirl who ran away from Bethnal Green four years ago," she said, referring to her neighborhood in East London. "And I don't regret coming here."
Those that knew her years ago were not exactly sure about what had happened to her since she left England for the terrorist filled region of the Islamic State. Now, she is wanting to return but says she is not sorry for having left. She has openly said she is okay with the teachings and acts of ISIS since she believes in Islam. She even said she is okay with beheadings.
"It is not clear whether the girls were ever combatants, no how deep their support for the group went. But now that ISIS has lost almost all of its territory, Western intelligence services worry about what to do with these so-called foreign fighters and their families once they return home," according to NBC News.
"Somebody who has spent a lot of time in the caliphate is likely to be radicalized, and women are as capable of committing terrorist acts as men," said NBC News security analyst Duncan Gardham. "It may be a difficult task to make sure she is not radicalized and ensure that she's not a threat."
The major issue to the people of England is the mystery about her motives for returning and if she believes in the mission of ISIS. At this time, it is anyone's guess as to why she truly wants to come back to the United Kingdom. However, England has just dropped the hammer on her requests: they have revoked her citizenship!
The news was first reported on Tuesday. The family of the ISIS bride reportedly received a letter detailing the actions by the British government. They were told they were free to appeal the ruling.
"It reportedly reads: 'Please find enclosed papers that relate to a decision taken by the Home Secretary, to deprive your daughter, Shamima Begum, of her British citizenship. In light of the circumstances of your daughter, the notice of the Home Secretary's decision has been served of file today (19th February), and the order removing her British citizenship has subsequently been made,'" according to the Mirror.
