A sad story emerged from the Hollywood scene early Tuesday morning, January 29th. Several news outlets reported that famous television star Jussie Smollett, 36 years old, was hospitalized after reportedly falling victim to a possible hate crime.
Smollett is best-known for his starring role on “Empire,” a hit tv series from Fox Broadcasting Company, that has been running for five seasons. Smollett has been a main character on the show since it started back in 2015. In the series, he plays a homosexual African-American singer, where some episode plots revolve around his struggles being black, gay, and in the spotlight.
According to TMZ, two men brutally attacked Smollett when he went out for a Subway sandwich at 2:00 AM in Chicago. The men allegedly fractured Smollett’s rib, tied a rope around his neck, and poured bleach on him as they yelled “This is MAGA country” and called him derogatory names.
The Chicago Police Department did confirm that authorities are investigating this situation as a hate crime. An official statement (below) was released shortly after the incident occurred.
“A 36-year-old man was walking … when two unknown offenders approached him and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him. The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim. At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim’s neck. The offenders fled the scene,” the police said.
Fortunately, Smollett is in good condition, reported PEOPLE. He received treatment and was released later on Tuesday morning.
As Christians, this story comes as a great reminder to follow the example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus once said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?” (Matthew 5:43-48).
Please keep Smollett in your prayers as he recovers. In trending news, Dog the Bounty Hunter’s wife is also in need of prayers as she continues to battle cancer.
