One man just made the ultimate public declaration of love. He proposed from the stage at the Emmys.
After winning the Emmy for director of a variety special, Oscars director Glenn Weiss took a bit of a detour from the usual thank you's. After calling his girlfriend Jan Svendsen for being the "sunshine of his life," he asked her a huge question.
"You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife," Weiss said.
The audience looked stunned for a moment before breaking out in overjoyed applause. Svendsen had a less effusive reaction, looking emotional after she realized what Weiss had said,
"I didn’t even ask yet," Weiss added in response to the applause.
Svendsen quickly went up to the stage to join Weiss. He offered her the ring that his dad gave to his mom over 67 years ago.
"And to my sisters and brothers, I didn’t swipe it! Dad knows I have it," he joked of the engagement ring.
He then proceeded to ask her to marry him, saying "Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on her finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?"
Svendsen emotionally said yes.
"Thank you to the Academy," Weiss joked afterwards.

Weiss said that he didn't initially plan to propose if he won the Emmy. However, he said he decided he definitely wanted to propose after losing his mother in the past few weeks.
"It became a thought...the thought picked up steam as we got here," Weiss explained. "This was coming. The timing just lined up very nicely and it was a really magical moment."
He added that carrying the ring around in his pocket made the red carpet stressful.
"Walking around on the carpet like nothing’s happening with this thing sitting in my pocket was very nerve-wracking," Weiss said.
What was his backup plan if he didn't win the Emmy? He was planning on proposing after the show.
"I suppose the ball or In-N-Out Burger, which is our staple after award shows," Weiss replied.
The stars at the award show didn't forget the proposal. During his speech, late-night host John Oliver briefly mentioned Weiss's proposal
He said, "On behalf of everyone in this room, we'd like to thank Glenn Weiss' fiancé, this could have been a very different evening."
Meanwhile, when Matthew Rhys received the Emmy for best actor in a drama series, he thanked his longtime love Keri Russell, adding that she said, "If you propose to me, I'll punch you clean in the mouth."
Congratulations to the couple! This will be such a beautiful memory for everyone involved!
