3-year-old Mariah Woods from North Carolina grabbed nationwide attention in November after she was reported missing by her mother. Initially, authorities were led to believe that the young child was abducted from her bedroom in the middle of the night.
Mariah’s mother told police that she checked on the child one evening around 11:00 PM, then her live-in boyfriend, Earl Kimrey, reportedly checked on the child again around midnight. The next morning when they woke up, she was gone.
An Amber Alert was immediately issued, hoping to find Mariah as quickly as possible. However, as the investigation continued, suspicions arose that Mariah was actually dead. Sadly, authorities were correct. The massive search suddenly transitioned into a homicide case.
Days later, remains of a 3-year-old body were found in a creek near Mariah’s home, which was later confirmed to be Mariah. Following the tragic discovery, the boyfriend of Mariah’s mom was arrested in connection to the child’s murder.
Kimrey is facing a number of charges including concealing of death, obstruction of justice, and others, but he has not yet been charged with murder. Kimrey also has a criminal history including assault charges, threatening a government official, and being drunk and disorderly.
Previously, court documents revealed that Mariah and her siblings were physically and sexually abused. Their biological father, Alex Woods, accused Kimrey of hurting his children several times after they came home with marks and bruises. He attempted to gain full custody, but the court denied his request.
Kimrey had his first court appearance at the beginning of December, where the judge announced he will remain on a $1.1 million bond. He was originally set to appear in court again on Monday, December 18th, but the court date was pushed back.
According to WNCT, his next court appearance will be on April 2nd of 2018.
The child’s murderer and cause of death are still unknown as of December 18th. However, it is known that she died of “unnatural causes” and the autopsy results are expected to be released soon.
Please continue to pray for the friends and family of Mariah Woods. May God bring them peace and comfort.
