On June 10, the sad news was reported that Mary Duggar, the mother of Jim Bob Duggar, had passed away. The matriarch of the Duggar family, who starred on “Counting On,”  died under tragic circumstances.

The Duggar family announced the sad loss on Facebook. She died on the afternoon of June 9th. She was 78 at the time of her passing.

The family wrote, “We are so sad to share that Grandma Duggar (Mary) passed away  Sunday afternoon, June 9th, 2019. Mary Lester Duggar grew up in Farmington, Arkansas and was married almost 50 years to J.L. (Jimmy Lee) Duggar who preceded her death.”

They continued, “Mary found great joy in sharing her love for Jesus and her own story of how at age 15 she asked Christ to forgive her for her sins. It was at the time she committed the rest of her life to live for Him, a commitment she kept with devotion.”

“She loved to share with others how they too could be forgiven of their sins, live a fulfilling life as a Christian, and one day spend eternity in heaven. She is greatly loved and will be missed so very much,” they added.

The post concluded, “She lived a tremendous life as a follower of Christ, a wife, a devoted mother, and loving mother-in-law and a much-loved grandmother. Proverbs 31:10-31 describes a virtuous woman, indeed she personified these beautiful verses with her life. We deeply appreciate your prayers for our family and all who loved Mary during this time.”

Now details have been released in her passing. Mary Duggar died of an accidental drowning in a swimming pool Sunday, Washington County Coroner Roger Morris confirmed to USA TODAY Wednesday.

"It appears she slipped and fell into the pool," Morris said. The accident took place at Mary's home in Springdale, Arkansas.

The Duggar Sisters Account said, “We are so sad to share that Grandma Duggar (Mary) passed away Sunday afternoon, June 9th, 2019. We deeply appreciate your prayers for the Duggar family and all who loved Mary during this time.”

Mary is survived by her son, Jim Bob, her daughter, Deanna, 21 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

After her passing, her granddaughters took to social media to remember their grandma. Here are some of their sweet posts:

Please be praying for the Duggar family during this time. May God give them healing and peace in the wake of her sudden death.
