It’s a long-standing tradition that members of the royal family attend the Wimbledon tennis championships in London each year, and they always seem to have the best time at the annual sporting event! From Duchess KateAnd Meghan, DuchessTo their husbands Prince WilliamAnd Prince Harry, it’s always fun to see the joy on their faces.
The first appearance of a British descendant dates back to 1907, when Queen Mary and King George V attended the oldest tennis tournament anywhere in the world. Decades later, Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI, gave his tennis skills a whirl when he attempted to compete in the 1926 Wimbledon championship. However, he “lost ignominiously in the first round and never entered again,” according to author Bruce Tarran.
Fast forward to 2017, when Duchess Kate was given the All England Club patronage by Queen Elizabeth II. She had held the position since 1952.
Kate is committed to her work with Wimbledon. She not only attends the championships but also visits charities and sporting programs throughout each year that are supported.
Prince EdwardDuke of Kent, in turn, is the president of All England Club since 1969 and presents the trophies to the winners each year at the conclusion of the tournament.
Wimbledon 2018 also marked the first solo appearance of Duchess Kate & Duchess Meghan after becoming sisters in law two months earlier. SuitsAlumni tied the knot Prince HarryIn May of that same year. Tennis pro Serena Williams — a close pal of Meghan — was in attendance at the couple’s nuptials.
