Nike, a billion-dollar worldwide corporation, recently sparked massive outrage after featuring former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a “Just Do It” campaign ad. The endorsement deal also included Nike selling Kaepernick-inspired apparel and donating funds to his “Know Your Rights” campaign.
The ex-NFL star is famously known for starting the “Take a Knee” protests, where players openly protested racial injustice and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem. Although the message behind Kaepernick’s protesting was positive, many Americans felt that he chose an inappropriate platform. To kneel on the field during the “Star Spangled Banner” was a great disrespect to our flag, country, and military heroes.
Kaepernick’s message was quickly lost amidst the controversial methodology. After the protests caused a lot of heat, he was dropped by San Francisco and has remained a free agent since.
In response to Nike’s new ad, consumers burned their Nike gear to boycott the company. In addition, several reports showed that the company’s stock dropped significantly.
President Donald Trump responded to the news via Twitter Wednesday morning. In his brief statement, Trump blasted Nike and the NFL while bringing attention to the importance of the American flag.
“Just like the NFL, whose ratings have gone WAY DOWN, Nike is getting absolutely killed with anger and boycotts,” the President stated. “I wonder if they had any idea that it would be this way? As far as the NFL is concerned, I just find it hard to watch, and always will, until they stand for the FLAG!”
Trump also told the Daily Caller, "I think it's a terrible message and a message that shouldn't be sent. There's no reason for it."
Conservatives respected President Trump’s patriotic response. Trump supporters responded to the president’s tweet in agreement with his statement.
