Tuesday, February 19th of 2019 marked a sad day for Major League Baseball team members and fans. A truly iconic sports legend, Don Newcombe, sadly passed away following a long illness. He was 92 years old at the time of his death.
Newcombe rose to success with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949. However, he also played for the Cincinnati Redlegs and Cleveland Indians before retiring in 1960.
He was one of the first African-American players in the MLB next to Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Larry Doby. His professional baseball career included many notable accomplishments such as being a 4-time All-Star player, winning Rookie of the Year at the start of his career, and remaining one of the greatest Dodgers pitchers of all time to this day.
The Dodgers organization announced his passing in a heartfelt statement Tuesday afternoon. In addition to his baseball accomplishments, he also served a two-year stint in the military during the time of the Korean War, reported TMZ Sports.
Tributes quickly poured in for the late baseball star. Many fans were devastated to hear of Newcombe’s passing and shared heartwarming posts in his honor.
