Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz, also known as “Big Papi,” is still recovering after being shot in the back on Sunday, June 9th. As previously reported, the 43-year-old designated hitter was ambushed at a club in the Dominican Republic.
He was rushed to the hospital for a 6-hour surgery before being flown back to Boston, where he now remains in the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. According to CNN, he required a second surgery. His wife shared more details on the matter.
"Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps," Ortiz’s wife, Tiffany, said in a statement on Wednesday. "His condition is guarded and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery."
“My family and I again want to thank everyone for their endless love and well wishes, and still ask for privacy while David continues to heal," Mrs. Ortiz added.
Authorities also confirmed more details from the investigation. The suspects were allegedly offered almost $8,000 (400,000 Dominican Pesos) in what appears to be attempted murder. However, it is unknown who orchestrated the attack and why.
Six people are now in custody (pictured below). However, one suspect still remains at large.
Although details are coming together amid the investigation, several pieces of information remain unclear — including an official motive. Local authorities are reportedly refusing to release a motive to the public at this time.
