Some horrible news was reported on Sunday, June 9, about one of the world’s most beloved baseball players. Former Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz, also known as  “Big Papi” was shot.

According to ESPN, Ortiz was at a club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Sunday when he was shot. He was immediately rushed to surgery.

Now, a major update has been given on his health.

Ortiz’s media assistant, Leo Lopez, confirmed that he is “stable” but still in intensive care. David’s family said that he is doing “fine.”

Lopez said, “Doctors say he is out of danger, but he is heavily sedated and will be in intensive care for the next 24 hours.”

The assistant confirmed that the surgery lasted for over six hours and required three doctors. They reportedly had to remove part of the athlete’s intestines and colon, and his entire gallbladder. He also experienced liver damage.

David’s father said, “Doctors say that David is out of danger, thank God. What they have told me post-op is that the doctors believe he will recover quickly.”
