The sad news was just reported that Phillies legend David Montgomery has passed away. He was 72 years old at the time of his death.

According to reports, Montgomery, the chairman and former president of the Philadelphia Phillies, died after a five year battle with cancer. He had been involved with the Phillies since he purchased the team in 1981 for $30 million.

Several people have written statements about the sports legend.

Managing partner John Middleton said, "David was one of Philadelphia's most influential business and civic leaders in his generation. He has been an invaluable business partner and, more importantly, an invaluable friend. He was beloved by everyone at the Phillies. Leigh and I are saddened beyond words."

The Phillies released a press statement following the sad loss.

Chairman Emeritus Bill Giles wrote, "David was truly a great man. I have never known a person with more integrity or who truly cared so much about everyone who worked for the Phillies. He and I worked hand-in-hand for over 30 years. During that time, I saw his unparalleled love for his family, the Phillies and the team's fans, and of course, the City of Philadelphia."

He continued, "David was a big reason why the Phillies won 12 division championships, five National League championships and two World Series championships in that time. He was a fierce competitor in everything he did, including his battle to fight his illness. He will be tremendously missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him."

The Washington Nationals wrote, "We are saddened to learn of the passing of longtime Phillies chairman David Montgomery. David was a true gentleman who did so much for Philadelphia and for the game of baseball. He will be greatly missed."

They continued, "On behalf of the Lerner family and the entire Washington Nationals Organizations, we send our deepest condolences to the Montgomery family and the Phillies organization."
