Liberal actress Cynthia Nixon, best known for her famous role in “Sex and the City,” has recently been the subject of rumors regarding a potential candidacy for New York Governor. As previously reported, Nixon may run against current New York Governor, democratic Andrew Cuomo, in 2018.
According to reports, the actress has a passion for the public education system, which she believes is very flawed in the state of New York. Previously, in the midst of the rumors, she targeted the Trump-DeVos agenda because she strongly disagrees with their education policies.
Nixon addressed the rumors on the “Today” show on August 8th. Unfortunately, she did not officially confirm whether she was running or not, but she did state “a lot of people” would like her to run.
When asked if she plans to run for governor, she only replied, “Yes, I have heard those rumors...I’ve read them. I’ve heard them.”
During the interview, she touched on her passion for education, “I think there are a lot of people who would like me to run for a variety of reasons. I think the number one is education; I’ve got three kids that are either in public school or have come through the public school system and we’ve got a real problem on our hands in New York State. We are the 49th in terms of equitable funding; that means there’s only one state that’s worse than us and that’s Illinois."
Nixon continued, "Governor Cuomo likes to say that we spend more per pupil than any other state and that is actually true, but the only reason that is true is because we spend so much on the kids in our wealthiest districts and so that evens out. Between our hundred richest school and our hundred poorest schools, there’s a $10,000 gap...that gap now between our richest schools and our poorest schools is wider under Governor Cuomo than it has ever been before and that’s got to stop.”
