Mother's Day is coming up just around the corner. As consumers are getting ready to purchase the perfect Mother's Day card this year, they might notice something a little different in the card aisle.
Retails are using less and less of the word "mother" in an effort to make celebrations these days more "transgender inclusive."
Waitrose, a supermarket chain, is one such retailer who is offering customers "Happy You Day" cards in the Mother's Day cards section. While they are now offering the inclusive cards without the word "Mother" in it, they still carry traditional Mother's Day cards.
The chain's goal is to include all who would like to celebrate the upcoming holiday by “broadening out who the cards can go to, whether it’s grandmas or transgender mums."
Since the supermarket announced their new cards, other retailers have joined in as well and now offer similar cards for Father's Day.
While some trans activists are pushing to rename Mother's Day altogether, this small change has been welcomed by many. Some even suggesting to change the name to Carer's Day or Guardian's Day. However, not everyone is happy with how things are changing.
