It has been reported that the Church of England has issued a controversial new guideline to young children. This guideline, which was meant to combat the bullying of LGBTQ persons, encourages all students to explore their gender identity and to feel free to be whoever they want to be.
According to the 2017 guidelines, all student should be able to play with as many identities as they desire, without any judgment or pressure from their peers. They should be absolutely free, claims the guidelines, to determine who they want to be. The Church of England believes that these guidelines represent its commitment to preventing prejudice against the LGBTQ community.
Furthermore, the guidelines are established to prevent any sort of stereotyping or bullying and are meant to protect students in an ever-changing "modern" world.
“The aim of this guidance is to prevent pupils in Church of England schools and academies from having their self-worth diminished or their ability to achieve impeded by being bullied because of their perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity,” read the guidelines, according to the Daily Caller.
BBC News writes that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has said that the guidelines are a "Christian message without exception or exclusion." He believes that the advice found within these guidelines will help to prevent bullying and will help children embrace who they are without fear of being bullied.
It is also noted by BBC News that the guidance recognizes that there is a great "breadth of views" among Christians and people of all beliefs toward same-sex marriage and sexual orientation. Of course, there are even different views on this issue among those who belong to the Church of England, which until recently held steadfast to the belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.
However, it then adds that Church of England school and academies have their self-worth diminished when people are bullied due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
