Throughout the Kavanaugh hearing, some people have stooped to the level of bringing Kavanaugh's two young daughters into the conversation. They have used the girls to make points about Kavanaugh and cruelly joked about them.
During the hearing, in a touching moment, Kavanaugh tearfully recalled how his 10-year-old daughter suggested they pray for Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. While it was a sweet moment that reflected the faith of the little girl, one cartoonist turned it into a joke.
A cartoonist for the Illinois Times drew a picture of the little girl saying her prayers. In a speech bubble, he wrote the contents of her prayer: "Dear God, forgive my angry, lying, alcoholic father for sexually assaulting Dr. Ford."
The cartoon has received backlash from both sides. Democrats and Republicans alike have decried the use of children to make a political point.
Kavanaugh's daughters found an unlikely champion after the cartoon went viral. On Wednesday, former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton tweeted out an impassioned statement.
Clinton, who is notoriously liberal and undoubtedly opposes Kavanaugh's nomination, wrote, "Please leave Judge Kavanaugh’s daughters alone. They do not belong in your cartoons, 'jokes,' or skits."
She concluded, "If you can’t make your point about Judge Kavanaugh, whatever it may be, without bullying his kids, it’s not worth making."
This isn't the first time that Clinton has stood up for children in politics. She advocated for Barron Trump every time the media has gone after him because they dislike his father.
