In Miami, Florida, a young adult male went with his girlfriend and her family into a Cheesecake Factory to celebrate Mother’s Day, but according to sources and eyewitnesses, his experience there was less than celebratory.
The problem, according to sources, was that twenty-two-year-old Eugenior Joseph was wearing a Make America Great Again hat, which did not bode well with several of the employees who were working at the restaurant that day.
According to multiple witnesses and by Joseph’s own account, a female employee walked up to him and began pointing at his hat, beckoning fellow employees over to join her in her verbal jeering.
"Her finger was literally on top of his head, we were all looking at her like 'what is happening?'" one witness explained. "She was pointing at him, calling her other coworkers, telling them to look at this guy wearing a Make America Great Again hat."
According to The Daily Wire, about a dozen other employees approached Joseph and made verbal taunts at him. One person even said that they wanted to punch him in the face. Others also made disparaging remarks about his skin color.
“So then all the employees started standing there, saying things out loud, like, ‘I’m going to knock his head in so hard his hat’s going to come off,” an eyewitness said.
Another employee clenched his fists and made hand gestures at Joseph. It appeared as if he wanted to engage in a fistfight.
"He got behind me and another coworker came by and they were staring at each other and he fist bumped him and then he started looking at me, balling his fists, smacking his fists, trying to scare me," Joseph said.
When Joseph got up to use the restroom, Cheesecake Factory employees continued to mock him. One witness said they looked like a lynch mob who were irritated that a black man was wearing a hat that showed support for the President of the United States.
"I got up and went to the restroom, my girlfriend followed me, and as we were walking back, a group of [the employees] came out from the back and they just started clapping and yelling, and just screaming things at me," Joseph said.
Late Monday night, The Cheesecake Factory responded to the allegations that its employees verbally attacked Joseph. Aletha Rowe, Senior Director of Public Relations at The Cheesecake Factory, wrote:
“No guest should ever feel unwelcomed in one of our restaurants and we are taking this matter very seriously. Upon learning of this incident, we immediately apologized to the guests in person. We are conducting an investigation and will take the appropriate corrective action.”
According to The Daily Wire, the restaurant had not yet contacted him to apologize, although the employees involved in the incident had been suspended pending an investigation.
