“Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon,” Groening, 65, told Smithsonian magazine in 2012. Over the years Groening, who grew up in Portland, Oregon, kept the show’s location a secret because he didn’t “want to ruin it for people” who thought it might be in Ohio, or Massachusetts.
“The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show Father knows best took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown,” Groening revealed. “When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also discovered that Springfield was one the most popular names for a U.S. town. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s They Springfield.’ And they do.”
