Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away on Tuesday shortly after announcing that she would not be seeking any further medical treatment. The 92-year-old is mourned by her husband, Former President George H.W. Bush, and their five living children.
Bush will be laid to rest on Saturday after a St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Newsweek reported that she will be buried near her beloved daughter, Robin, who died of leukemia at the age of 3 in 1953.
Bush will be laid to rest by her loved ones on the grounds of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University in Houston. There is where Pauline Robinson “Robin” Bush is already buried.
In a 2012 Today Show interview, Bush spoke about her heartbreak after losing her daughter. The trial broke her heart and turned her hair completely white.
She recalled how she felt when doctors told her there was no treatment for their toddler.
The doctor said, “You don’t do anything. She’s going to die,” the former first lady recalled in a 2012 Today show interview. “She said, ‘My advice is take her home, love her. In about two weeks she’ll be gone.’”
In her memoir, Bush related how the doctor told her to “…forget that Robin was sick, make her as comfortable as we could, love her — and let her gently slip away...She said this would happen very quickly.”
The Bushes declined to take the doctor's advice. Instead, they sought treatment for their second child. She lived for an additional seven months before dying on October 11, 1953—only two months before she would turn four years old.
“I was combing her hair and holding her hand,” Bush told Today in 2012. “I saw that little body, I saw her spirit go.”
Barbara Bush never forgot her first daughter. She remained with her throughout her whole life, and she would surely be joyful to be laid next to her daughter.
“Robin to me is a joy. She’s like an angel to me, and she’s not a sadness or a sorrow,” the former first lady said in 2012.
By the grace of God, Barbara will get to see her daughter again in heaven—free of cancer and pain. Please pray for the Bush family as they mourn their wife and mother. George H.W. Bush released a faith-filled statement after his wife's passing.
