The Boy Scouts of America have just made a huge announcement that has angered parents across the nation. They are officially changing their name to Scouts BSA in an effort to accommodate girls into their programs.
Prompted by the addition of girls to the ranks, the iconic Boy Scouts program for kids ages 11 to 17 will be called Scouts BSA starting in February 2019, according to a news release on Wednesday.
"We wanted to land on something that evokes the past but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward," Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh told The Associated Press. "We’re trying to find the right way to say we’re here for both young men and young women."
People were quick to point out the fact that Girl Scouts still exist and is completely capable of mentoring young women. Most online users found the announcement ridiculous and sad for the Boy Scouts.
"Boy Scouts of America also unveiled its 'Scout Me In' program on Wednesday that welcomes girls into the ranks while also noting that more than 3,000 girls nation-wide are already participating in Cub Scouts ahead of the full launch later this year," reported Today.
Some questioned the motives of the move. Most people believe that the Boy Scouts are caving under the liberal pressure to be non-discriminatory. Others believe they are making the move for simple financial reasons. Since the number of enrolled scouts has dropped in recent years, opening the ranks to girls allows for more scouts overall. Still, parents aren't happy about the change.
