Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker, also known as “Sweet Pea,” has died at only 55 years old. He was involved in a tragic accident in his home state of Virginia.

The four-weight world champion was walking across an intersection around 10:00 PM in Virginia Beach when he was struck by a pickup truck, reported NBC News. The driver of the vehicle stayed with Whitaker until local police arrived at the scene.

According to USA Today, the driver was questioned. After questioning, authorities believe the incident was a complete accident, but it is still under investigation.

"The investigation is still ongoing," a spokesperson for the local police department said in an email statement. "However, it does not appear that drugs/alcohol or speed were factors in the crash."

His youngest son, Devon, also released a public statement informing that he thinks his dad "was wearing dark clothes, the road was dark and the driver didn't see him."

This story is developing and will be updated if more information is released to the public. Whitaker leaves behind his sons and daughter. Please keep them in your prayers during this difficult time.
