A former professional boxer has sadly passed away after choking to death during a croissant eating contest. The tragic story is being reported today after making headlines around the globe.

The incident occurred on Sunday at an eating contest in Argentina. Former pro boxer Mario Oscar Melo, who was once the WBO light heavyweight champion, was on stage participating in the event.

During the contest, Melo began to choke. He was in visible distress and numerous officials and medics ran to his aid. The video can be seen below. Warning: Some viewers may find the footage to be too graphic. Viewer discretion is advised.

"According to local reports, there was a firefighter and a doctor in the crowd who raced up and tried to help -- but it does not appear there was a dedicated, trained medical staff at the event," reported TMZ.

He was rushed to a local hospital but sadly he did not survive. He was only 56 years old at the time of his death.

Please join us in praying for his family and friends as they navigate through this difficult time. We ask for God's mercy and grace to surround and comfort them as they endure the loss of Melo.
